Mehringdamm Family Centre

Mehringdamm Family Centre is located in Kreuzberg, very close to the Bergmannstrasse neighbourhood. It is a centre for families seeking neighbourhood contacts, leisure and educational activities and advisory services. Our family centre was founded by the PFH in summer 2007 and since then has developed many opportunities for parents and children in its programme.

Opportunities for the whole family

The café forms the heart of Mehringdamm Family Centre. It is open to everyone and is right next to the spacious playroom for children. In the mornings and afternoons qualified educators are readily available for conversations with parents and accompany the children as they play.

In the mornings, parents with babies and children can choose between different parent-children groups. For instance, we offer: PEKiP, a parent-children group for babies from birth to 12 months; a parent-children group for children between one and three years of age; the ‘growing up together’ group or the bilingual ‘Griffbereit’ group in Turkish and German. There is a group for twins, baby massage, yoga for mothers and children, and gymnastics for fathers and children on Saturdays. Parents can also meet for activities that they have organised together on their own initiative. ‘Hereinspaziert’ is an open drop-in opportunity to meet, chat and play. It takes place every Wednesday from 2 pm to 3.30 pm and is accompanied by professional educators.

We equip the open play area with stimulating play and activity materials in keeping with the Early Excellence approach. We sing together and a colleague is available for conversations with parents about their child’s development and upbringing. In the afternoon from 4 pm to 6 pm there are free activities: music, play, reading and creative activities, a variety of parent-children courses, the ‘Starke Eltern – Starke Kinder’® (Strong parents – Strong children) course, events focusing on parenting and seasonal festivals. On two weekends each year we stage a family flea market in the grounds surrounding the building. And from October to April on every first Sunday in the month, parents and children can come to the ‘Bewegter Sonntag’ (Active Sunday), where they can eat waffles, play together and take part in a variety of activities in a relaxed atmosphere.

Working together with parents

Cooperating together with parents is very important to us. Parents organise activities together, such as parents and kids cooking, making mosaics, or movement games on ‘Active Sunday’. Parents with a migration background organise their own parent-children groups with languages such as Tamil, Spanish, Czech or Ukrainian. In this way we support the bilingual development of the children. With the agreement of the parents we observe the children who regularly visit the family centre. We do this in self-chosen play situations and offer them educational opportunities designed to match their interests. Afterwards, we join in an exchange with the parents, talk about their child and combine our observations with the experiences of the parents. In the family café there is a daily swap shop for all kind of things to do with children. There are fixed sessions each week where parents can receive free help and advice about work, family law and filling in application forms. We help them to find the right advisory and support services. In this respect we cooperate closely with the education and counselling centre for the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg which has an office in the same building just one floor above the family centre.  Another important aspect of our work is cooperation with the surrounding children’s day care centres and school, the local library and the social services in order to boost the growth of family-friendly structures in the neighbourhood. Mothers with a migration background can learn German with us whilst their children are cared for in the family café playroom.
